If your pc is freezing, could it be a sign of failing hardware? Let’s walk through some steps to check to see what the issue might be, before making any assumptions. This kind of thorough troubleshooting can prevent you from purchasing hardware when it isn’t needed.
Feel free to do these in ANY order, and I’ve added a “level” for effort for each one. If you’re a beginner, feel free to just try the ones marked as “Level: EASY”, and possibly even “Level: “MEDIUM”. One of those could be the issue and you’ll have fixed your computer’s freezing issues and be able to call it SOLVED!
Faulty RAM (Memory)
Symptoms:
- Random freezes with no warning or error messages
- Apps crash frequently: Helpful tip, make a note of which apps tend to crash, and also any apps that you use frequently that don’t crash
- PC doesn’t boot reliably or takes a long time to load: This can mean anything that doesn’t look like the usual startup that you are used to seeing on your pc. Helpful Tip: Keep a log of your computer’s behavior since it could behave differently and you may not remember later on
Step-by-Step: Test RAM with MemTest86 or Windows Memory Diagnostic
Windows Memory Diagnostic (Quickest)
Level: EASY
- Press
Windows + R, typemdsched.exe, then hit Enter. - Select “Restart now and check for problems.”
- Let the tool run. Your PC will reboot and display a memory test.
- If errors appear, you likely have a failing RAM stick.
Note: Sometimes people ask, “Is this a safe step to perform on my already troubled computer?” That’s a great question and the answer is “Yes!”, and that’s because this is simply a software that is already built in to your computer that only checks for issues. It does not update anything.

Hard Drive or SSD Issues
Symptoms:
- System freezes when saving files or during startup
- Disk usage hits 100% frequently
- Clicking or buzzing sounds from drive
Step-by-Step: Check Disk Health with CrystalDiskInfo
Level: MEDIUM
- Go to: https://crystalmark.info/en/software/crystaldiskinfo/
- Scroll down and download the Standard Edition installer.
- Install and launch CrystalDiskInfo.
- Look at the health status: “Good”, “Caution”, or “Bad.”
- Pay attention to Reallocated Sectors, Pending Sectors, or Read Errors.
- If you see “Caution” or “Bad,” back up your files and replace the drive ASAP.
Graphics Card (GPU) Problems
Symptoms:
- Freezes while gaming or watching videos
- Artifacts (weird lines or colors) on screen
- Display flickers, goes black, or crashes
Step-by-Step: Monitor and Stress-Test GPU with MSI Afterburner and FurMark
A. Monitor Temps with MSI Afterburner
Level: EASY
- Download from: https://www.msi.com/Landing/afterburner
- Install and launch the app.
- Observe GPU temperature under idle and load conditions.
- Idle: Below 45°C
- Load: Below 85°C
B. Stress-Test with FurMark
Level: ADVANCED
- Visit: https://geeks3d.com/furmark/
- Download and install the tool.
- Run the stress test at your screen’s resolution.
- If your PC freezes, reboots, or shows artifacts during the test, your GPU may be failing.
Motherboard or Power Supply Unit Issues
Symptoms:
- Random freezes during startup
- USB ports stop working unpredictably
- PC freezes even after replacing other components
Step-by-Step: Visual and BIOS Checks
Level: ADVANCED
- Power down and open the case.
- Look for:
- Swollen or leaking capacitors on the motherboard
- Scorch marks or corrosion near power connectors
- Boot into BIOS (usually
Del,F2, orF10during startup). - Look for Voltage Readouts:
- 12V rail: Should read ~12V
- 5V rail: ~5V
- 3.3V rail: ~3.3V
- If voltages are off or unstable, test with a known-good PSU or take your PC to a repair tech.
Use Event Viewer to Look for Clues
Level: ADVANCED
- Press
Windows + X→ Event Viewer - Go to Windows Logs > System
- Filter for Critical and Error entries around the time of a freeze.
- Look for errors like:
Event ID 41 – Kernel-PowerEvent ID 7, 9, 11 – Disk errorsEvent ID 6008 – Unexpected shutdown
Take the guesswork out and use the free tools above to rule out hardware problems one by one. Many freezing issues come down to RAM, power, or thermal instability, and early detection could save your system and data.
🛠️ Next Step: If you’ve run these tests and still have problems, your next best move is to take the system to a local computer repair shop and share the test results you’ve already gathered.
